In this scene about Nansen’s expedition to the North Pole, the client wanted to represent two key aspects. First, to show the ship Fram trapped in the ice during its drift towards the North Pole, for which a combined view was used: the bow half in exterior view and the stern half in cutaway, revealing the decks and interior rooms. Second, to illustrate the activity of the 13 crew members, reflecting their life aboard, from caring for the sled dogs to making repairs and conducting scientific experiments.
To organize the scene, in addition to the usual methodology for creating 3D models, it was necessary to design a visual script that strategically placed each character, ensuring that the crew’s actions accurately reflected the variety of daily tasks on the expedition. This approach allowed for a balanced composition, rich in narrative details and visually informative.
Final composition of the scene, which includes a cutaway view of the Fram ship and its 13 crew members engaged in various everyday activities of the expedition.
The model of the Fram was created by combining construction plans from a previous expedition with photographs and descriptions from historical sources of the expedition to be illustrated.
Render test showing the geometry involved in the composition, all genertaed in Zbrush. Then, textures and colors were added using Procreate.
